We weren't super close, but he was a good friend and I always admired him greatly, as a person, a DJ and a producer.
I consider myself lucky to have DJed with him many times. We had some fantastic conversations and I've witnessed some amazing moments.

Hear's to the memory of our friend DJ Mehdi... A very special dude.

When I was in Paris in May: Mehdi, Brodinski and I threw a Rap party at Social Club... It was really fun. Here's some footage of Mehdi I shot there on my flip cam. It was a wildly fun night, and I'll never forget it.

A few nights later, I went to visit Mehdi and Busy P while they were playing at a club called La Bellevilleoise and shot the following footage. Crazy night, please epic stage dive at 8:30:

One of my favorite Mehdi releases, was this lesser know mixtape of his own beats from 2006 called Les Loukums, based on Dilla's Donuts album concept.

The Swimming With Sharks crew knows that pool parties won't go out of style as long as water stays wet. It's a collection of largely slow, spacey and tropical disco that perfectly encapsulates both the vibe of the Swimming With Sharks parties and an emerging group of California dance music producers that create music made for soaking up the sun. 1. Poolside, "Do You Believe (Amen Brother Remix)"
Poolside's "Do You Believe" has already established itself as an essential summer 2011 jammer, and here newcomers Amen Brother remix the LA duo. Poolside asks an earnest question, "Do you believe we have what it takes?" We have suntan lotion. We have cold drinks. And now we have blithe grooves and this tune stuck in our head. So yes, we believe we have what it takes.

2. Cosmic Kids, "Reginald's Groove (M/B remix)"
"Reginald's Groove" by Cosmic Kids gets remixed by M/B, the new disco arm of Acid Girls. With its insistent bassline and multi-layered composition, the results are a bit more jacking than the other tracks here, but it's still mellow enough to get serious spins during daylight hours.

3. Pools, "Mervin's Emerging Urgency"
Pools, a new group comprised of DJ Morse Code and (Thee) Mike B, makes deluxe drifting music. It's the kind of stuff you want to hear when lounging on one of those plush water rafts with built in cup holders. A buoyant bassline and steady beat keeps this effervescent banger afloat, while the dubbed out effects wash over you like the aftermath of your Uncle Larry's atomic cannonball.

Already a gurgling, aquatic track, at the three-minute mark, LOL Boy's "Porteils" gets fully submerged in the deep end. When it resurfaces almost a minute letter, the syncopated guitar riff, handclaps and gently phased bass all pop open like a pool deck's umbrella, offering some much needed shade, plus the comfort to dive back in whenever you're ready. Take the plunge.

5. Superhumanoids – Mirrors (Cosmic Kids Remix)
To close out Sharkwaves Volume 1, Cosmic Kids remix their LA brethren Superhumanoids' majestic anthem "Mirrors." Cosmic Kids remove the shades of gray from the original to reveal a lush palette of pastels. Big synths and the dulcet tones of lead singer Sarah Chernoff practically leap out of the speakers. And the chorus is the kind of kiss that leaves you praying for an endless summer.

FRESH PRODUCE! They threw some of the illest parties in LA. This mix, save for the terrible cover art, was completely amazing. Released officially on Richard Vissions V-Records, it was really a perfect example of the prominent Funky Breaks sound being played at the underground parties in mid-90s Los Angeles. I used to see Jesse Brooks play all the time and always really liked his sets. He was also quite friendly when I'd roll up to him trippin' ballz halfway through his set to ask about a record. Props.

Once again it's March 9th. The anniversary of the assassination of The Notorious BIG, who in my opinion is one of, if not the best rapper of all time.
I've avoided doing Biggie blends and remixes for a long time out of fear of not doing the verses justice. However, I'm really proud of what Morse Code and I have done here.
A funky break, some bumpin bass and some very ill BIG verses, not to mention some studio out take moments that we built the beat around, as opposed to cutting out.

A few weeks back I was helping with the DJ AM Memorial Record Sale and my homie DJ Grant Shapiro brought his stack to me to be priced. For some reason this record, Ronnie Gee "Raptivity" stuck out to me. I asked him if he knew what it was and he said no, that it just seemed awesome. I agreed and asked him to let me know what was up with it when he listened to it. It turns out we were both right, it is awesome and it's where the "Sounds You Are About To Hear May Be Devastating To Your Ear" sample comes from. SICK! Thanks AM for continuing to educate us from beyond. And thanks to Grant who was kind enough to make us this nice rip of the track.

As I stated in the Coming Soon post, DJ Tim's mixtapes were important for me. All throughout the 90s Tim's tapes were sold at the dopest spots (Union, FTC, Fat Beats, Beat Non Stop) and were always packed with the newest, illest records as well as really good exclusive freestyles. I am very pleased to be the guy who gets to present these to the internet as they were a big influence on my style. These tapes were HUGE for my friends and I. I've met lots of other folks who loved them as well. However, in this day of everything ever being available via Google search I was shocked to find that nobody had uploaded any of these! I had a couple of the tapes lying around but it was my search for their existence online that ultimately led me to to the man himself.

Here are some words from Tim Wallen aka DJ Tim:
"Really, who would pick up a tape by DJ TIM? I know that wasn’t the coolest of DJ names by any means. Obviously it was what was ON the tape not the DJ’s name. Jeru kind of nicknamed me Timo & DJ Mind Motion kept calling me that but I just stuck with DJ Tim.
I did try to put together a great package though. It was like putting together a mini album. Good graphics/matching tape color…lots of good stuff on it. Mind Motion designed my logo and I had a couple really good graphic artists (Themba & Guthrie.) Too many mixed tapes back then were just slapped together. I would collect a ton of new songs,advance tapes,dats,test pressings, promo only stuff/exclusives what ever I thought I could use… Then it was like a puzzle. I would have way more songs than I needed then slowly narrow it down to what worked and I could fit on there. I figured most folks have A.D.D and wanted to hear a ton of new stuff so many times I would only put a verse or two and then on to the next song.
After a trip to NYC I usually would be ready to make a tape after lots of shopping & visiting labels A&R folks. No one was really doing tapes out here at that time so I found a niche and filled it.
I would go up to Harlem & 125th or Brooklyn Fulton St to buy other mix tapes at least once a year. I was way more into NYC/East Coast style rap. My favorite mixtape DJ by far was DOO WOP. He could rap great, put a ton of exclusive freestyles out and he had a good ear for the music they freestyled over & what songs he put on his tapes. His raps were kinda funny in a way... He had a sorta sarcastic/chip on his shoulder/smart ass lyrics. I wish he would of put out a full album of him rapping.
I started off making tapes in 92 & 93 then stepped it up in 94 and the best years were probably 95 to 97 although I kept making them till 99.
I was lucky enough to have access to a lot of the best indie labels through my work first at an independent distributor (CRD.) We carried: Tommy Boy, Wild Pitch, Profile, Next Plataeu, Island labels like 4th & Broadway, Delicious Vinyl and many more then later @ Capitol & V2 records. I owe lots to those folks and many more for hooking me up with some great stuff… Like Benny B and other SF DJs. I also owe a great deal to Mind Motion here in SF who let me open some of his DJ gigs. He did my logo & we did a tape together too … and of course his buddy Ivan who hosted most of my tapes. Ivan sounded way better on the mic than me… With him and all the drops I had the tapes never got too boring."

That also really helped get em out there. It was a a hustle but a fun one. I had some dude in London selling my tapes. This was way before email & the internet. Lots of phone work too.
I tried to put some west coast joints on the tapes here & there but what I liked and wanted to hear most was NY stuff. I would never put radio stuff on there because what is the point? You would be sick of anything that was on the radio or even a big club song didn’t need to go on a tape. Tapes are for discovering new music not playing the hits..at least that was my philosophy. Giving light to under appreciated stuff. Some of the stuff on there makes me cringe now but others sections & songs of the tapes I still really like & will crank up when listening. I did em on a little Tascam 4 track. I had a sampler that I used mainly for my drops that I bought from Dan the Automator (He lived up the street at the time.)
My CD player in my truck broke recently and I started listening to old tapes, mine and others, and it brings back memories of another era for sure.
I still can’t believe how I got all these guys to come out to my little house in the Sunset District to do freestyles @ my house. MCs like: Mobb Deep, Jeru, Lil Dap, MOP, Black Moon, Helter Skelter, OC, Xzibit, Masta ACE and more."

When I was in High School there were no rap tapes I looked forward to more than DJ Tim's. They used to sell 'em at Union on La Brea and me and my boys would go every month to see if there was a new one, turns out he only made tapes every 4-6 months. Always choc-full of exclusives, new heat and crazy freestyles. Very tastefully mixed by Tim and usually hosted by DJ Ivan who I always liked because he didn't scream all over the tapes like S&S, Craig G or Clue.
After years and years I finally made contact with DJ Tim and he was kind enough to send me master tapes of 4 of my favorites... Which will all be posted here soon.

I rarely post people I don't know's mixes around here. But the thing is, it's been years since I've heard a dance DJ mix I liked this much. You know, that old school shit where I hit the stores in search of nearly every track played.
It's not even that new, in fact, I've been running it for months. But I can't stop listening to it and felt the need to spread the word.
I'll admit, I've only passively been a fan of Riva Starr. Over the years I've played a handful of remixes and tracks , but I never really was paying full attention. Well, I've started. I know I'm a lil behind here as he's been headlining gigs all around the world and gracing magazine covers. None of that matter though, because this mix is a banger start to finish. It takes me back to the cassettes I used to buy at raves. Solid vibe throughout and full stoney bass biz. At one point it even goes D+B on you with a stellar Marky remix of Claude Vonstroke.

After Brighton I took a night to recover from the weekend but hit the streets running on wednesday. Spent some time with DJ Yoda, who is the man! I had a very authentic UK experience driving around in his Mini listening to Jungle on Pirate radio as Double Decker buses drove by.

Later that night I stopped by Benji B's night, Deviation, and caught Peanut Butter Wolf and Theo Parrish.

I put in some time in the studio on Thursday and went to a lovely meal with some friends. (Thanks to Romain for an excellent steak dinner at Hix!) I then rolled with Alchemist to peep the Alchemist VS Just Blaze Soundklash at East village.

After Oslo and Copenhagen I spent a couple days in Brighton, UK and loved it. I played for a bit at Adam Freelands 'Marine Parade Microfest' at Concorde 2. DJ Morse Code - The Break Up Of 1901

So a couple months back in the Red Bull Three Style Battle at Playhouse my main man Morse Code showed us all how dope of a DJ he really is. He won that contest by 100 miles that day.
For me, and many others, the stand out moment of the set was when he did a live blend of Phoenix's 1901 acapella over Mario's 'Break Up'. He had the whole club (maybe 1000 peeps) going bonkers for that shit. He and I got in the studio to replicate the blend so people could listen to it, and lesser DJ's, such as myself, can play that shit! It's been killing it in the clubs for me and Morse recently put it up on his soundcloud so snatch that shit up!
