Live Set From Young & Restless

For the last month or so I've been doing a party at Club 86 called Young & Restless with the folks from MAD DECENT & DANCE RIGHT along with DJs PUBE$, ROCKWELL and DESERT EAGLES. The musical theme has generally been old school. The party was basically LA's best kept secret. We had guest dj/live sets from Justice, Diplo, Walter Meego, Santogold, Pandemonium Jones and more. Due to nightclub dramatics, it looks like we're a wrap. Luckily I hit record on Serato last tuesday, and as a memento I'll always have this set to remember the party by. Old School R&B and Hip-Hop at it's randomest... Joints from Club Nouveau, Timex Social Club, Loose Ends, Grand Puba, Zhane, Soul II Soul, Family Stand, Common, Jay-Z, Miss Jones, CRU, Cam'Ron, Blahzay Blahzay, AZ and more... Completely live and unedited (with fuck ups.)

DJ Syndicate - I Can't Hold It

Chord 44 - 1996

This shit, produced by ROMANTHONY is a down right sexy beast. The epic drum intro should be playing as you comfortably ease your way into a really cracking gay club. As the drums disappear and it moves into it's ridiculously sultry distorted guitar solo, you lock eyes with the one hot straight girl in the spot. The track builds back up and you passionately make out for 7 minutes, unaffected by the sweaty shirtless man fest around you. The track ends, the lights come on and you realize she wasn't that hot, but hey, you'll always have that moment.

Props to Julius Papp, who's mixtape I first heard this on back in the day.

Green Velvet - The Stalker (Laidback Luke Remix)

Music Man - 1996

This is another one of my all time favs. I first heard it on Jason Blakemore's Humanism mix (still one of my favorite mixtapes ever) and I still remember the first time I heard it on a big system. It was a rave at the Orange Show called Good-N-Frut-E. (Ayyooo!) The headliner was Frankie Bones and it was a big deal. Back to the matter at hand, Donson, Olde Toby and I arrived early to check out a guy named DJ Jasen, who they had seen at a party in SB. (Oddly enough, I met Jasen at WMC this year and he's a reader of the blog! Whatup dude!). He played a really memorable set and I freaked the fuck out when he dropped this. I went straight to DMC on Melrose the next day and sang it to the dude at the counter, who somehow always knew what i was talking about. I dropped like $40 on the Carl Cox "The F.A.C.T. II" 4x unmixed vinyl just to get it. Musically, this track is a combo of bestbasslineeverness and reallyfuckingspookyvocalloopocity.

C'est Le GRAVELEAF

I'd like to take a moment to hip everyone to a new music project from myself and Omar Doom (Sir Graves, Doomington.) We're called GRAVELEAF and are making pure fire. We'd really appreciate any thoughts on the tracks.

Check out our first two songs on the Graveleaf Myspace and add us!

If we keep working at our current rate you'll be hearing lots more new shit in the very near future.
We're working on a remix for a group on Epic called The Fashion. I played the demo version at Banana Split last sunday and it really jumped off:

... actually, so did THE CRUSADE, another track we're particularly proud of:

and hey, while we're watching videos, check out this footage from a party I did last saturday called DOWNTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT. It was thrown by super homies Nate Day and The Cocaine Kids (who's party i'm playing at this saturday) and it jumped the fuck off:

Downtown Saturday Night will be a monthly, coming back at you May 17th!

Thanks to Glenjamn for the videos.

Dickie Greenleaf

Hello all,
Due to an active (yeah right) social life, making new music, and the shitstorm that was WMC (more on that later) you may have noticed a slowing in posts. No, I'm not done. Far from from it. In fact, I've got stacks and stacks of digital wax just waiting in the wings. Until then, I thought I'd finally explain who this Dickie Greenleaf character is. Well, as many of you know, it's me, not some other guy who never posts, as some seem to think.
In 2002, I found myself checking out a lot of mix CD's from the Back To Mine and Another Late Night series. They were/are really fucking cool for the most part. Compilations put together by great dj's and artists that reflected not just what they would play for a dance floor, but what they would play back at the house or just songs they thought were cool.
At the time I was mainly playing commercial gigs and had little to no outlet for all the other shit I was checking out, listening to or collecting. So in Dec 2002, I decided to put together a lil' mix called Bong & A Blintz. I pressed 100 CD's and gave them out to all my friends as holiday gifts. Being I was doing a lot of hip-hop stuff at the time, I thought it smart to use a different DJ moniker, hence Dickie Greenleaf, the name of Jude Law's character in The Talented Mr Ripley. I wasn't a huge fan of the movie, but holy shit that's a rad fucking name.
Cut to May 04, after a trip to NY where Stretch and I basically spent 5 days vinyl shopping, I found myself with a heap of cool new music I couldn't really play out. So I made another one. This began the tradition of doing the CD's every year and a half.

So here it is, for the first time ever as continuous files, the complete Dickie Greenleaf series.
