Weak Sauce

So my Time Warner Cable High Speed Internet has been out for over a week. It's crazy... they have no status updates and have no idea why. But it's happening to all my friends too so something stupid is going on. I'm sure they'll need a bailout or something. The thing is, I've become quite accustomed to my 8mb per second shit and due to the outage I'm forced to coast on my neighbors wifi which is cool for emails n shit but is mad slow for uploading/downloading so I just cant sit hear while songs upload in real time. I simply refuse.
As soon as my High Speed shit comes back, or I change providers, I have 2 delightful mixes and 5 incredible late 90's house tracks to post.

This is my favorite song right now:

We have a freaky deaky space in downtown and SCOTTIE B is back in LA for the first time since my BDay last year, which was nuts. If you're in LA, come live it.

Here's a lil gift... It was my secret weapon all summer. This shit has the greatest clap build ever constructed.

One of My Favorite Mixtapes

When I first moved to NY in mid 1997 I kinda went mixtape crazy... from Canal Street to Sonic Groove, I was just buying mad mixtapes from DJ S&S to Derrick Carter and everything in between.
One night I went to a rave-ish party at Vinyl which had Biz Markie performing. He came out with Keith Murray and it pretty much made me want to tongue kiss the city's butthole. I was having the night of my life, regardless of being being there by myself, but that's the beauty of NY.
I ventured to the back of the club and there was a dude with a mixtape stand. Now, one of my favorite things about raves was the ability to shop for shit while tripping balls at 5am. So shop I did.
One of the tapes bought that night was this one:

DJ JS One & DJ Spinbad - The Cold Cutz Remixes - Side A
DJ JS One & DJ Spinbad - The Cold Cutz Remixes - Side B

When I got back to the dorm room (what up Weinstein!) I put the tape in and was floored. These remixes are so ill. I'd go as far as to say that this is the best blend tape of all times. (Yet another ribbon for Spinbad & JS One who actually hold my title for best mixtape of all times with Rock The Casbah.)
Amazing use of movie samples, great acapellas paired with the perfect beats and a guest scratch appearance from thee DJ Scratch. The Cold Cutz even go as far as to make most of their own scratch hooks for songs, a la Primo. It's just really dope on many levels. Listen carefully to the details. It's 11 years later and I'm still noticing shit.
Also, Side B kicks off with the legendary Hip Hop vs Rap remix. I couldn't even understand what was happening the first time I listened.
I met Spinbad a few years later, I think I talked to him about this mixtape for like 40 minutes... Sorry bro.

Banana Split 2 Year: Experience the Banana

Sunday November 2nd, we celebrated the 2 year anniversary of Banana Split. It was pretty fucking amazing. Easily one of the best nights we've ever had and it was crazy crowded!

Everyone there had a great time, but for those of you who weren't... you can basically re-live the night through this post, as the entire night was recorded!

I kicked off the night with some tasty jams and then AM joined in and we went 1 for 1 for the second half of my set. Thats when things started getting crazy on the dancefloor, as we trying to out bomb drop each other:

DL:(thee) Mike B VS DJ AM Live at Banana Split 2 Year Anniversary 11-2-08

Then AM took over for a little while, joined later by JFK(MSTRKRFT), and then they went 1 for 1 for a bit. At this point we're deep in total dancefloor madness.

DL:DJ AM vs JFK Live at Banana Split 2 Year Anniversary 11-2-08

Then it was time for our guest of honor, the one and only DJ Falcon. He played an amazing set and the crowd response was unbelievable, I was definitely fanning out. He really took the ableton dj style to the max, doing ill live remixing and adding drums here and there. I LOVE THIS MIX!

DL:DJ Falcon Live at Banana Split 2 Year Anniversary 11-2-08

After that, our secret special guest Busy P took over and dropped bomb after bomb on em. New tracks from Tiga, Soulwax, Armand Van Helden, Crookers, Mr Oizo and the like... even some Vampire Weekend thrown in for good measure.
(please notice how scary sebastiAn looks in this pic)

Left Overs

So last week was the last Do Over... I think I went like 20 times this summer! Too much fun was had and so much wine was drank. Good times.
In an old post I hinted that I was gonna eventually post Stretch's set from this years opener... 6 months later, here it is:

DL:Stretch Armstrong Live At The Do Over 5-18-08 part 1
DL:Stretch Armstrong Live At The Do Over 5-18-08 part 2

I also never posted my set from my second appearance of the summer. Jazzy Jeff was supposed to play but ended up having to leave town so I was the obvious next choice (yeah right!)
My goal was to only play stuff I had never played there, as it was my 4th appearance. I started off with tons of random Wu-Tang joints, moved into some classic hip-hop and breaks and then disco'd my way into a full on groovy house set... enjoy.

DL:(thee) Mike B Live at The Do Over 9-21-08

And if you haven't already... go to Eli's Outside Broadcast and nab Cosmo Baker's set. Definitely one of the best set's I've heard there, if not anywhere!

See ya next summer.

A Quadruple Dose Of Lil' Louis

It's Friday and I'm feeling housey. Why not rally around some radness from Lil Louis in his various incarnations? Yup... no reason not to. Let's roll.

DL:Lil' Louis & The World - Why'd You Fall (Epic 1989)
(The opening of this track could permanently send you into psychosis if you're drug intake is too high. Handle with care)

DL:K.O.F./A Lil' Louis Painting - Stormy Black (Do Be Do Mix) (Nite Grooves 1997)
(One of my all time favorite joints. It's deepness knows no bounds and it was played to death by pretty much everyone that year.)

DL:Lil' Louis & The Party - Clap Your Hands (Fremur Mix) (ZAC 1997)
(Murderous bassline, soulful 90's style vox and some real pretty vibes. SO DOPE!!!)

DL:Lil' Louis - Conversation (Mike B's, Pause, Just Blow Edit)
(Hey! look whats back from the dead! The old link went down so I figured I'd throw this back up in here.)

THE WEDNESDAY B-SIDE number 25

Def Jam - 1996

On one of his Crooklyn Cuts mixtapes, DJ Premier rocked doubles of this and brought it back over and over and over... As a 17 yr old listening to that cassette in my Volvo station wagon I couldn't help but love it.
It was the B-Side to Loungin, which was pretty much the jam of the summer that year, so it turned out I had it on that 12" but never knew til much later.

On October 12th, Haycock, co-chairman of The Do Over dropped in to LAX to do a murderous set of classic rave, house, hip-hop and everything in between... DJ Sneak, back on the blog!

Anyone who has been keeping up with MBVSDG knows that I'm a huge fan of DJ Sneak and have been since I was just a youngster... well the good news is, I've actually been corresponding with the House Gangster himself!
He's been keeping my life pretty funky by sending me tons of new stuff he's working on as well as inviting me to curate the second room at this years Sneak's Birthday Beats, an event that takes place every year in LA with rave mainstays B3 and the homie Pinga. The line up is insane... In addition to the Sneak, we have Derrick Carter, Wally Callerio and a very special guest.

If y'all don't already know, MAJOR is a monthly after hours party that Acid Girls, Staccato and I have been building. Real house vibes from classic to acid and minimal.
Anyway, that's why it's gonna be called the Major Room, we'll also have Paparazzi in the room and DJ Shawn V. (BTW, the next MAJOR is Nov 15th with special guest Michna!)

Sneak's also jumped into the blog fire and has been posting amazing shit. He's been putting up live sets, vids, top 10's etc and it's THE SHIT! Check it regularly from now on.

In fact, his whole new website is quite fresh and clean.

CLICK IT TO PEEP

Finally, here's the best part of all, why we're all here; free music.
Sneak sent me the illest of all ill mixes. 70 minutes of all classics!!! Disco, proto-house, acid... all of it. It's unbelievably dope and instantly became one of my favorite mixes... Ballee-dat.
In the words of Sneak himself, it's that "Real DOPE OG Chicago Jackin shit."

!!!!THIS IS A MUST DL!!!!
DJ Sneak - HOUSE GANGSTER CLASSICS [192 kbps - 71 mins]

And as if that weren't enough, he also sent me this Obama track he made for the upcoming election. Perfect for your 4:30am political rallys!

Quit Yer Foolin... Fools Gold Remixes (+ Royal Rumble remix of Graveleaf)

Fools Gold has really become one of the better labels out there, and though I am not typically in the glamorous bizness of posting new tracks... I thought I'd post some stuff from their new Scion Sampler because it's really good and they said it was OK. Here are some stand outs:

Treasure Fingers - Cross The Dancefloor (Chromeo Remix)
Nacho Lovers - Go On (Blu Jemz Remix)
A-Trak - Say Whoa (DJ Spinna Remix)

The Blu Jemz Remix of the Nacho Lovers track is a certified banger, so make sure you don't sleep. Jemz himself played it right out The Crusade* at The Do-Over a couple weeks ago. (It was a ballsy move but it actually rocked the floor.)

*BTW, The Royal Rumble Remix of The Crusade has been making the rounds and it's a dance floor destroyer. If you haven't already, download it.

And don't forget to RSVP for the Fool's Gold Remixed
tour, which is hitting Miami, Atlanta, Philly and Baltimore this
month. Do that here.

Back To The Arena!!!!

I played at this party earlier this year and it remains to be the best gig so far this year, next to that crazy Crystal Castles thing. So hyped to get back in there. Not only is the spot legendary, packed and loud as fuck but the resident DJ Paparazzi is one of the best DJ's in LA.

Here's what our pal Brodinski had to say about the last time I played there:

... is there anything more awesome than broken english???

Here's the video they put together fro last time:

BOC Productions - Fall In Love (Alan Braxe's Remastered Remix)

Chez - 2000

This was the first thing I heard from Alan Braxe after Vertigo. I always liked it, quite a bit actually. I think I've used it on 3 different mixes. It was much simpler and a little deeper than Vertigo and the bass line is unbelievable. Oddly enough, for all the Braxe-mania that transpires in blog town I have never even seen it discussed. Plus, I figure posting some Braxe can help get my numbers up a lil' shump...

A Wool Lotta Love

To love DJ Wool is to love a sweaty, loud Irishman... But it's a love I'm not ashamed of. He's a legendary DJ, a founding member of The Glass and my brother in vintage skateboard mania. Apparently, he's also a swell vocalist and producer and I get to post an entire EP... He said to post the one's I liked the best but I really liked all of them. So here it is, DJ Wool's The Star Of East Berlin EP plus a bonus remix of Gangsters & Models by my main man Cobra Krames.

Banana Split Hip Hop Night Recap

So last sunday, we had a Classic Hip-Hop night at LAX and it was pretty amazing.
AM, Adam 12 and I played the music

Titties was out

LA legends DJ Revolution and DJ Muggs were in the house

Adam 12 brought a matching set of hot Suicide Girls

and whats a hip-hop night without dudes and 40's?

We were at capacity by 11:30 and the crowd was really into it. And they weren't even just fronting, watch what happens at the begining of this video when Adam 12 drops Diamond D's Fuck What U Heard...

That footage is from near the end of the night when Adam, AM and I went 2 for 2 for awhile... Here's some more:

As always thanks to Glenjamn for filming and taking pics... he has lots more video from that night here

A part of my early set got recorded but I guess I had the bass up a little loud... you get the idea.

DL:(thee) MIKE B - Live at Banana Split Classic Hip-Hop Night - 7-27-08

There's way more scratching than usual here... I had a lot of Sangria at The Do Over before hand. 40's and blunts kid.
