... both time and BPM wise.
I was digging through the N section of my rap records for a reason I can no longer remember and was happy to see a couple of my nerdy delights from back in the nine-what.
Natural Elements - 2 Tons
Tommy Boy Black Label - 1999
I heard Stretch play this on XL Radio, back when I had first met him, and asked him about it all excitedly. He was all: "whatever." I'm still pretty down and I still think Charlemagne is a way slept on producer.
Natural Resource - Bum Deal
Ekapa RPM - 1996
This was on every underground mixtape from 96... So dope. If not this song, than another one from the same 12". I first heard it on DJ Premier's 4 part Crooklyn Cuts mixtape. BTW, the female MC on this is Jean Grae, then known as What? What?.
New Kingdom - Good Times (Del Remix)
Gee Street - 1993
I remember that these guys album was advertised in Thrasher alot. Then I heard Good Times in a skate video... I liked it. One time at a record spot I found this 12", turns out Del did a Good Times remix. Kinda dope.

Gotta Have House ... Music (Edits)
Last Sunday, in the set mentioned in the previous post, I played 2 relatively random house jams. Modjo's Music Takes You Back, a b-side from their self titled album from 2001, and DJ Sneak's Funky Rhythm from his 2004 LP, Housekeepin'.
I always thought they were both really cool tracks but never ever played em out until last week... Album versions man, not hype. Fading out all early n shit, fuck that. So I did some epic editing.
The Sneak joint is one of those dope-ass narrated house jams, where your host, in this case DJ Sneak himself, kinda talks you through the song. He says so many amazing things that I felt the need to accentuate.
The Modjo one is just an ill frenched out filtery disco death dancefloor deceptacon ... a totally unoticed gem buried deep in history of random pop-dance full lengths. I'm here to give it it's moment in the sun.
Feel the vibe, feel the vibe, feel the bass.
DJ Sneak - Funky Rhythm (B's Speaker People Edit)
Modjo - Music Takes You Back (Mike's Brie Edit)

Working For The Weekend
The weekend got started early on thursday last week with Eli-173 aka Zartek's big 30th BDay bash. Stretch & I dj'd and it was coo-de-la. Just total dopeness all around. All the homies where in the house, and the tunes were stupendous.
But then Friday it was WILD DOGS!!!
Me + Blu Jemz
Pube$ + beer + random bird giver.
The Smoking Area
Stretch & Scottie do the swaperino.
Dancefloor crack city.
Alex + Kevin
I got wasted. Which unfortunately led to the recorder fucking up and not capturing any of the stellar sets from Blu Jemz, Scottie B or Stretch.
On Sunday, Stretch did a set at The Do-Over, which is the homie Haycock's annual summer weekly. It's so ill... and has really dope secret special guests every week. Be there when it's ME suckaz!
Then we made our way over to LAX for Banana Split, where we partied quite hearty.
... and where the recorder worked! I'm glad it did because Stretch killed it.

Meanwhile, I played what might have been the most random set ever captured.

Ahhhhh... Effervescence
RAL/Chaos - 1994
Nice and Smooth are easliy in my Top 5 rap groups of all time, no question. Evevn their lackluster 3rd album, from whence these tracks came, is a personal classic. SO when Sal Paradise came around asking for Blunts... I had to oblige. Here's both sides of the 12".
Nice & Smooth - Old to The New

Kelis - Bossy (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Earth Out Remix)
Virgin UK - 2006
We all loved the sebastiAn mix, we all loved the Switch mix, we really really really all loved the Alan Braxe and Fred Falke mix. But were those versions so powerful that we ALL slept on the Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Earth Out Remix? Not me, mon frere. I think it's so fresh when someone does two completly different remixes of the same track. Like Armand Van Helden's two mixes of Faithless 's Insomnia or Buckwild's two mixes of Channel Live's Mad Izm.
Kelis - Bossy (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Earth Out Remix)
BONUS:
Channel Live - Mad Izm (Buckwild 95 mix)

Faithless - Insomnia (Armand's European Vacation Mix)

The Final Peice Of The Funky Puzzle
The story ends here... DJ Scottie B, Baltimore Club originator, label owner and all around good dude came out to LA for his first time and tore LAX down. I'm glad I was there. I don't know what he was doing different than AM or I but for some reason his tracks all sounded deeper and bassier and generally more knocking. Regardless, he killed it and i have recorded proof! Packed full of Unruly Originals, BMore classics, lots of Switch remixes and some secret bangers. If memory serves, both AM and I's fists were in the air for his whole set. (Pause?)
The Legendary Scottie B Live @ Banana Split 5/6/07
The Saga Continues
The following is really dope. AM's set from Banana Split this last Sunday. He play's so much different shit that I won't even try to explain it. Shawn Caeser of Unruly Records was there with Scottie B. and at the end of the night refered to Adam as the "Mohamed Ali of DJ's." Scottie himself was awestruck.
Now, over the years I've heard this guy play at least 80 times. Everytime he tops himself. And no matter how many little biters are out there filling there Sidekicks with track names, he always stays 10 steps ahead. Love this, hate it or debate it. I'll continue to watch AM do things live on two turntables that these fools couldn't replicate on a 4 track. Or for you youngters, Pro Tools.
HIGHLIGHTS: Listen to what he does with Herman Kelly and The Rapture at around 17:30. Then listen to what happens at around 23:30.

This Sunday : B vs B
That's the flyer for this weeks Banana Split, I know, it's like a 10 year old girl's screen saver, but I have some insight for y'all...The big dogs are all out of town! And the homie DJ Spider is apparently now going to be in Barbedos or some such wonderful place. Which has left only two men standing: Baltimore DJ Legend Scottie B and myself. This is not some shit you wanna miss.
In honor of this event, I'm posting my favorite remix of Scottie's (which is one of my most super secret club weapons, well, until now.)
Bonde Do Role - Gasolina (Scottie B & King Tutt Remix)
Seriously, everytime I play this anywhere someone runs to the booth and asks about it. No joke. It's just funky as hell and has a rediculous party vibe.
You should also definitely buy the whole Bonde Do Role EP.
And don't forget to drop $$$ over at UNRULY ONLINE.
Here's something random:
Gwen Stefani feat Akon - The Sweet Escape Remix (Mike B's 130 edit)
So, I suppose I need to start hyping all of y'all up on this, as some of you (umm, Donson) need to plan a trip to LA. Much more to (pause)come on this party ...
I realize that Scottie is appearing at LAX first, but the bookings were made in reverse. Mistakes happen, flyers get made, life goes on.
