Two years ago, on a trip to SF, I stopped by one of my favorite record stores on earth, Tweekin Records on Haight St. Quite an interseting trip to the store it proved to be. I was talking to the dude in store about some of stuff I was into at the time: DFA, Headman, Playgroup ... funky disco punk. I asked if he could pull some cool new records for me. He handed me an extra fat wax stack which me and my road dawg Olde Toby spent hours going through. Alot of great 12"'s were discovered/bought that day. It would also be the day I was introduced to alot of my current favorites. He handed me some record by Booka Shade VS M.A.N.D.Y. called Body Language, as well as a bugged out record called This Is Sick by some dude named Solid Groove. This was also the first time I'd ever heard of a cat that goes by the name Lindstrom. Wow, thanks dude from Tweekin for keepin me, as always, just barely ahead of the curve. Not ahead enough to take credit for anything, but enough to feel just a little cooler than everyone else. I'm not sure wether he handed me this record, or wether I just listened to it because it had a Chicken Lips remix on it. Either way, it's awesome.

This is truly a great track. It basically sums up, to me, what we used to refer to as techno in the early 90's. It used to get a lot of run on the amazing but short lived MARS 103.1 radio station here in LA and was co-produced by DJ Attack (RIP), who ran the infamous Underground Construction label. This record has the most insanely incredible sex breakdown rivaling French Kiss. I don't believe I'll ever get sick of listening to Speed fuck Trixie while trying to break his speed record...

If you want me buy your record, put Acid in the title. Seriously. There are so many amazing records incorporating that word. From the OG's like Maurice's This Is Acid, to Thursday Club's A Place Called Acid to recent gems like Les Visiteurs Snoops Acid Drop or Wink's 516 Acid. I could go on and on... and I'd love to but I'll spare you any further acid facts. I'm not trying to go all Tim Leary on y'all. So, to get to this record... I bought it unsolicited at Satellite in 97 because it had Acid in the title, listened to it a few times in my doormroom and have had it in a cardboard box til a few weeks ago, when I went through the box and found some real heaters (more to be posted soon.) It turns out this is the first ever Black Strobe record. I can now say that I was listening to Black Strobe 10 years ago. Take that all you recently converted hipsters.

Tony A's Roadium Mixtapes and the Birth of Hyphy

In the late 80's and early 90's DJ Tony-A of Hi-C fame would sell his mixtapes at Torrance's Roadium open air market. He would get freestyles from the all the west coast locals like Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Tone Loc, JJ Fad etc. I guess the demo version of "I'm Your Puppet" blew up off of one and got radio play and turned Hi-C imto the star he was on the west coast back then. He just recently re-released these mixes which you can cop form his website: Tony-A.com. Do it, they're fucking rad.

That convo took me back to 1996, when we were sitting inside bassbin's at a rave while Oscure & Fester were doing their trademark 2x4 set. When the "I Can't Explain" sampled guitars of "Going Out Of My Head" dropped we just kinda looked at each other like "dude, what the fuck is this awesome shit?" Sean busted a fatty trainspot and caught the name on the 12" : FATBOY SLIM. To this day I continue to buy all of this man's work on Vinyl no matter how crappy it can get (see: his most recent album) and it's no small feet. This guy has made so much shit it's rediculous. For those who don't know, Norman Cook is also known as: Cheeky Boy, Chemistry, Fatboy Slim, Feelgood Factor, Son Of A Cheeky Boy, Sunny Side Up, Urban All Stars and Yum Yum Head Food and was in Beats International, Double Trouble, Freak Power, Fried Funk Food, The Housemartins, Mighty Dub Katz, Pizzaman and Rockaway Three. He's also the genius behind Southern Fried Records which continues to put out really cool records.

I've been playing at a spot on Melrose Ave here in LA called Monroes since april of 04 and have had some really fun times in that bitch. I've had 2 birthday party's there and tried my hand at promoting for a short while.
Last saturday, the 31st, would be the last night of it's existence as we know/knew it and it was pretty damn fun.
The entire night was recorded, so here's a lil' souvenir for all the friends and fam that were there for the epic last night or that came through over the years. (And BTW I was working with a broken cross fader up in there... not making excuses, just sayin'. I was basically just using the volumes on their busted-ass Allen & Heath, which has a shitty fader to begin with.)
